The race to save the river Ganges
Project description
Worshipped by a billion Hindus and a water source for 400 million, the Indian government is battling to save the River Ganges. This project visualises the pollution that the river has to deal with on a daily basis and just how bad teh water quality can be.
What makes this project innovative?
This project combines granular data with vibrant pictures taken from the Ganges as Reuters reporters followed it from its source. The presentation of the animated drains diagram shows the data in a clear and engaging way. Seeing the amount of waste water visualised brings home the problems faced by the government.
What was the impact of your project? How did you measure it?
The project was picked up by other news organisations. It spread widely on social media and was a huge hit with readers, who had never seen the pollution in this detail before. This remains one of the most in-depth projects published on the subject by a news organisation.
Source and methodology
The pollution and drain data came from India’s Central Pollution Control Board. The drains data was animated by creating the visualisation in SVG format and using javascript. Other data sets included population density and also government data. Reuters reporting from the Ganges added vital colour and strong images.
